Quality control of a periodic structure is performed using the damping rate of acoustic waves generated in the periodic structure. In this technique, an excitation light beam illuminates the first layer in the periodic structure to excite an acoustic wave. Possible irregularities in the periodic structure can scatter the acoustic wave, thereby increasing the damping rate of the acoustic wave. A sequence of probe light beams illuminates the periodic structure to measure the acoustic wave as a function of time to generated a temporal signal representing the damping rate of the acoustic signal. The acquired damping rate is employed to evaluate the quality of the periodic structure.

Systems and methods for quality control of a periodic structure

The structure and method of fabricating a radiation and temperature hard avalanche photodiode with integrated radiation and temperature hard readout circuit, comprising a substrate, an avalanche region, an absorption region, and a plurality of Ohmic contacts are presented. The present disclosure provides for tuning of spectral sensitivity and high device efficiency, resulting in photon counting capability with decreased crosstalk and reduced dark current.

Radiation and temperature hard multi-pixel avalanche photodiodes

The structure and methods of fabricating a high efficiency compact solid state neutron detector based on III-Nitride semiconductor structures deposited on a substrate. The operation of the device is based on absorption of neutrons, which results in generation of free carriers.

Solid-state neutron detector device

A method for generating light intensity inside a tumor to aid in the treatment of diseases such as cancer is disclosed. The light is generated inside the body to perform a modified photodynamic therapy treatment (PDT) that allows treatment of body regions that are inaccessible by normal PDT procedures. In addition, the use of two spatially and temporally coincident treatment modalities, i.e. radiation and PDT, have the potential for significant biological synergy in the tumor.

Use of nanoparticles in the photodynamic treatment of tumors and non-destructive testing

High performance photovoltaic devices are provided. Certain embodiments relate to the use of Boron-Nitride (BN) thin films as anti-reflection coating (ARC) material on Si and GaAs solar cells. A low and wide reflectance window covering a large energy range of the solar spectrum is available. For a large part of the useful solar spectrum, the index of refraction of the grown BN thin films remains constant at about 2.8. In another embodiment, a BN ARC is applied directly on ordinary window glass providing the device's mechanical strength.

Boron nitride anti-reflection coatings and methods

Improved methods of bonding solid materials include a step of fabricating a micro-column array (MCA) on at least one surface to be bonded. The MCA formation process can be modified to cause and/or prevent chemical alteration of the surface being treated or to deposit a coating on the surface. In a preferred embodiment, the MCA is fabricated by laser treating the surface, such as by laser ablation.

Use of nanoparticles in the photodynamic treatment of tumors

A photodetector having sensitivity in a wide temperature range in both an infrared and an ultraviolet band is provided. The photodetector is formed on a single chip and is designed to be blind to solar or visible radiation. Structures disclosed allow fast and efficient detection of signals with high spatial and temporal resolution. Such sensors may be used for multi-pixel focal arrays and applied for fire detection applications, various space- and military-related applications and other applications. A method for increasing rejection of visible light by the IR sensitive material is also provided.

Maghnia or Mostaganem bentonites, are activated by contacting the Maghnia or Mostaganem bentonite with an acid solution of selected concentration and then drying the Maghnia or Mostaganem bentonite to form an activated bentonite catalyst. This activated bentonite catalyst may be used to polymerize a vinyl, acrylic, cyclic ether, aldehyde, lactone or olefin monomer. In a further embodiment, a perflourinated amine or diamine is synthesized by contacting a Maghnia or Mostaganem bentonite with an acid solution of selected concentration, drying the Maghnia or Mostaganem bentonite, and absorbing a secondary amine with the Maghnia or Mostaganem bentonite to form a perflouroamide iodide salt. The perflouramide idodide salt can then be extracted with a polar solvent and neutralized by the use of a basic solution.

Composition and method for catalysis using bentonites

A method for storing energy in a capacitor includes connecting a first conductor to a first electrode. A second conductor is connected to a second electrode. The second electrode is separated from the first electrode by a dielectric layer. The dielectric layer includes a layer of boron nitride, BN. The conductivity of the dielectric layer is lower than the conductivity of the first electrode or the second electrode. A voltage of at least 5 volts is applied between the first electrode and the second electrode. The voltage is applied by means of the first and second conductors.

Capacitor and method of storing energy

This disclosure describes one-chip micro-integrated optoelectronic sensors and methods for fabricating and using the same. The sensors may include an optical emission source, optical filter and a photodetector fabricated on the same transparent substrate using the same technological processes. Optical emission may occur when a bias voltage is applied across a metal-insulator-semiconductor Schottky contact or a p-n junction. The photodetector may be a Schottky contact or a p-n junction in a semiconductor. Some sensors can be fabricated on optically transparent substrate and employ back-side illumination. In the other sensors provided, the substrate is not transparent and emission occurs from the edge of a p-n junction or through a transparent electrode. The sensors may be used to measure optical absorption, optical reflection, scattering or fluorescence. The sensors may be fabricated and operated to provide a selected spectrum of light emitted and a multi-quantum well heterostructure may be fabricated to filter light reaching the photodetector.
