The present disclosure provides a lubrication system comprising: a pump having an inlet in fluid communication with a lubricant source and an outlet; a cooler having an inlet in fluid communication with the outlet of the pump and an outlet; a lubrication filter having an inlet in fluid communication with the outlet of the cooler and an outlet; a first delivery path in fluid communication with the outlet of the lubrication filter, the first delivery path being configured to deliver cooled, filtered lubricant to a bearing system of an engine; and a second delivery path in fluid communication with the outlet of the pump, the second delivery path being configured to deliver uncooled, unfiltered lubricant to piston cooling nozzles of the engine.

Systems and devices are disclosed for controlling fluid flow to piston cooling nozzles with a fluid flow control device configured to open when an internal combustion engine requires piston cooling at high speed but remains open for a period of time after the engine speed drops below a threshold to prevent heat soak damage to the pistons.

An engine block assembly and method manufacturing an engine block assembly and related components. A casted engine block assembly includes a cylinder block portion. The cylinder block portion includes a plurality of cylinder block openings disposed therein, a cylinder block flange portion positioned at a top of the cylinder block portion and a cylinder block crankcase portion disposed at a base of the cylinder block. The cylinder block flange portion is configured for coupling the cylinder block to a cylinder head. The cylinder block portion includes a plurality of cylinder block walls extending between the cylinder block flange portion and the cylinder block crankcase portion and positioned about the plurality of cylinder block openings. The cylinder block walls house a plurality of internal channels. The plurality of cylinder block walls are void of enclosed openings extending through at least one of the cylinder block walls in the plurality of cylinder block walls.

Systems and methods are provided for a cylinder block having one or more bulkheads. The bulkheads provide a dual-wall structure that may enhance the stiffness of the cylinder block in bending and torsion. The bulkheads may also provide an oil drain to allow oil to directly drain through a hollow core of the bulkhead. An overflow outlet may be formed in an inner wall of a bulkhead. In some implementations, a cylinder block with bulkheads may increase an oil capacity of an engine.

The engine block includes a plurality of cylinder barrels positioned in the engine block, at least one oil jacket channel formed in the engine block, and an oil inlet port positioned in a peripheral wall of the engine block and connected to the at least one oil jacket channel. The at least one oil jacket channel includes a plurality of curved channel sections. Each curved channel section in the plurality of curved channel sections extends about at least a portion of a circumferential portion of a respective cylinder barrel in the plurality of cylinder barrels. The at least one oil jacket channel extends between adjacent cylinder barrels of the plurality of cylinder barrels in the engine block.

The engine block includes a plurality of cylinder barrels positioned in the engine block, at least one oil jacket channel formed in the engine block, and an oil inlet port positioned in a peripheral wall of the engine block and connected to the at least one oil jacket channel. The at least one oil jacket channel includes a plurality of curved channel sections. Each curved channel section in the plurality of curved channel sections extends about at least a portion of a circumferential portion of a respective cylinder barrel in the plurality of cylinder barrels. The at least one oil jacket channel extends between adjacent cylinder barrels of the plurality of cylinder barrels in the engine block.

An apparatus includes an internal combustion engine with an engine block and a cylinder liner housing a piston. The engine block includes at least one cylinder cavity and at least one replaceable cylinder liner positioned within the cylinder cavity. At least two press fit areas create an interference fit between the engine block and the replaceable cylinder liner. One press fit area is located proximate to the top surface of the engine block and the other press fit area is located in the engine block at the opposite end of the cylinder liner. A storage volume is formed between the press fit areas by the outer surface of the cylinder liner and the surface of the engine block defining the cylinder cavity.

An internal combustion engine piston having a combustion bowl with fuel control structure for redirecting at least a portion of the fuel exiting the combustion bowl. One form of the piston includes a sharp edge disposed at the outer surface of the piston adjacent the entrance to the combustion bowl and a rounded fuel receiving lip located within the combustion bowl.

A piston having an offset piston bowl for use in an engine having a correspondingly offset fuel injector, wherein the piston bowl has a non-circular or non-annular shape. The non-annular bowl shape is contoured to permit increased spray plume length, avoiding impingement. The bowl is especially useful in a diesel engine having two-valves per cylinder, wherein the injector must be mounted in an offset location because a central region of the cylinder head is occupied by two proximal valve ports. The bowl has a raised inner portion surrounded by a concave outer portion. A peak or apex of the raised inner portion is located closer to a peripheral wall of the concave outer portion at a 'short' side of the bowl than at a 'long' side of the bowl.
