The present technology relates to a transparent coating system or film which comprises a transparent, polymeric material, one or more pearlescent pigments, and one or more transparent dyes, organic pigments, organic pigment derivatives or inorganic pigments. The coating may be used to give well-defined transmission and reflection spectra in the visible region while having a high degree of reflection in the NIR region.

Pigments for filtering the solar spectrum

The current invention relates to a piezochromic device wherein said device exhibits a reversible change in appearance initialed by an external applied force and then reverts back to its original appearance over a set relaxation time when the external force is removed. In one embodiment, a device comprising a transparent or semi-transparent cover layer and a magnetic layer, wherein between the cover layer and the magnetic layer is a liquid medium containing magnetically alignable pigments.

Cosmetic comprising multi-colored lustrous pearlescent pigments

A pearlescent pigment and a process for enhancing the magnetic properties of a pearlescent pigment. The pearlescent pigment has a layer with regions of &#x3b3;-FeOand regions of &#x3b1;-FeO. The magnetic properties of a pearlescent pigment may be enhanced by the steps of: providing a platelet pigment with a layer of FeO, with a magnetic susceptibility less than 0.1&#xd7;10m/kg; reducing some or all of the FeOto FeO; and oxidizing some or all of the FeOto &#x3b3;-FeO. The color difference (&#x394;E*) between the provided pigment and the resultant pigment is not more than about 5.

Magnetic pigments and process of enhancing magnetic properties

A pearlescent pigment, wherein the pigment is an inorganic material and the color of a homogeneous coating of the pigment, measured over a white background, is selected from the group consisting of: a CIELAB L* value of about 30 or less and a chroma value of about 3 or less; a CIELAB hue angle, h, from about 50 to about 80 degrees, wherein L* is not more than about 85, and the chroma value is greater than 22; a CIELAB hue angle, h, from about 80 to about 275 degrees, wherein L* is not more than about 80, and the chroma value is greater than about 10; and a CIELAB hue angle, h, from not less than about 275 to not more than about 50 degrees, wherein L* is not more than about 85, and the chroma value is greater than about 9. The pigments may be used in a variety of applications including cosmetics, plastics, automotive, or architectural coatings.

Multi-colored lustrous pearlescent pigments

An orange pearlescent pigment comprising a substrate and a first layer containing FeOOH, and a second layer containing FeOlocated between the substrate and the first layer. The color of the pigment is such that a homogeneous coating of the pigment, measured over a white background, has a CIELAB hue angle, h, from about 40 to about 60 degrees, and the chroma value is greater than 50. The pigment may be used in a cosmetic, coating, or ink composition.

A pearlescent pigment comprising a substrate and a first layer, wherein the first layer comprises iron oxide, wherein the iron has from about 1% to about 30% Fe(II) and from about 70% to about 99% Fe(III). A process for making these pearlescent pigment, comprise reducing a metal oxide substrate with a hydrogen source in the presence of a noble metal catalyst in a liquid medium. The pigments may be used in a variety of applications including cosmetics, plastics, automotive, or architectural coatings.

Multi-colored lustrous pearlescent pigments and process for making

A pearlescent pigment comprising a substrate and a first layer, wherein the first layer comprises iron oxide, wherein the iron has from about 1% to about 30% Fe(II) and from about 70% to about 99% Fe(III).
