A printer operates under a first set of conditions to create a first set of M of samples and under a target set of conditions to create a second set of K samples. Each sample is produced using the same colorant(s). The actual spectral reflectance for each sample is measured. The actual reflectances for corresponding samples in the first and second sets are used to create a cross-validated, partial-least-squares transform that maps a reflectance from a sample produced under the first set of conditions to a reflectance from a sample produced under the target set of conditions. The transform and reflectances produce a set of predicted reflectances, each representing a sample producible under the target set of conditions using one colorant. The predicted reflectances and the colorant(s) are used to generate a table predicting a color value when the printer operates under the target set of conditions.

A transform useful for predicting a reflectance value producible by a printer while operating under a predetermined target set of operating conditions using reflectance values produced by the printer while operating under a predetermined reference set of operating conditions is generated using an efficient sample set that contains the minimal required number of samples.

Method for selecting a sample set useful in relating color reflectances producible under reference and target operating conditions and the sample set producing thereby

A printer is operated under a first set of conditions to create a first set of M number of samples and under a target set of conditions to create a second set of K samples. Each sample is produced using the same colorant(s). The actual spectral reflectance for each sample is measured. In accordance with the present invention the actual spectral reflectances for corresponding samples in the first and second sets are used to create a cross-validated, partial-least-squares transform that maps a reflectance from a sample produced under the first set of conditions to a reflectance from a sample produced under the target set of conditions. The transform and the actual spectral reflectance measured from the M number of samples in the first set are used to produce a set of M number of predicted reflectances, where each predicted reflectance represents a sample producible by the printer under the target set of operating conditions using one of the M colorant(s). Using the set of M predicted reflectances and the M colorant(s) used to produce the samples in the first set, a table predicting a color value producible by the printer on a substrate using a predetermined colorant(s) when the printer is operable under the target set of operating conditions is generated.

A computer-implemented method for displaying on a color display device a realistic color of a paint coating comprising the following steps: (A) identify L*, a* b* color values at least three different angles for a paint coating from a data base; (B) convert the at least three angle L*, a* b* color values to tristimulus X, Y, Z values; (C) develop continuous function equation for each tristimulus X, Y, Z values vs. aspecular angle via computer implementation and calculate the range of angles to be displayed; (D) calculate a range of aspecular angles required to display the object; (E) calculate R,G,B values from tristimulus values over the range of aspecular angles and determine maximum saturation of R,G,B values and bring into range allowed by color display device; (F) determine statistical texture function of paint coating to be simulated; and (G) apply statistical texture function to the R,G,B values of step (E) and display color pixels on color display device to show realistic color of paint coating.

The activations are representative of the input parameters P of the process and the outputs are representative of the characteristics C of the product of the process. A set of goal signals G corresponding to the desired physical characteristics D of the product are produced and used to generate a signal representative of the error E between the goal signals G and the outputs Y of the network. The values of the updated inputs A.sub.U of the network that are needed to drive the error E to a predetermined minimum are determined, and the actual physical input parameters P of the process changed to correspond to the updated inputs values A.sub.U producing the minimum error. The present invention can be used in both a batch initialization situation and/or in an on-going process control situation.
