A method of forming a cutting element comprises forming a first material comprising discrete coated particles within a container. The first material is pressed to form a first green structure comprising interbonded coated particles. A second material comprising additional discrete coated particles is formed over the first green structure within the container. The second material is pressed to form a second green structure comprising additional interbonded coated particles. The first green structure and the second green structure are sintered to form a multi-layered cutting table. Additional methods of forming a cutting element, a cutting element, and an earth-boring tool are also described.

Methods of evaluating prototype cutting elements for earth-boring tools may involve generating first and second sets of virtual representations of cutting elements from first and second sets of used cutting elements. First and second sets of measures of damage corresponding to damage for each of the first and second sets set of virtual representations of cutting elements may be determined. A best-performing set of cutting elements from the first and second sets of used cutting elements according to the first and second sets of measures of damage may be identified by performing a statistical analysis.

In one aspect, a drill bit is disclosed that in one embodiment may include a bit body, a rotating cutter on the bit body, and a metallic seal between the bit body and the rotating cutter that includes a first seal member, a second seal member having a first end in sealing contact with the first seal member, a second end fixed relative to the first end and a bias member between the first end and the second end that adjusts the load on the first seal member in response to external load applied on the drill bit.

The radius of curvature of the bearing pin journal and cone bearing surfaces are matched or conformed on the bearing pressure side. In addition, diamond inlays may be located on the bearing surfaces of the cone, the bearing pin, or both components.

Mechanical systems including such a bearing apparatus are disclosed, such as, for example, a motor for use in subterranean drilling. A method of assembling a bearing apparatus is disclosed. More specifically, a rotor and a stator each including at least one bearing element may be provided and a compressive force may be applied to the rotor and the stator to compress the bearing surfaces of the rotor and the stator against one another. Bearing apparatuses, systems including same, and related methods

An earth boring bit has a bit body having a depending bearing pin. A cone has a cavity rotatably mounted on the bearing pin. A seal groove is formed in the cavity of the cone. An elastomeric seal ring is located within the groove and forms a seal between a base of the groove and the bearing pin. The seal ring has two side surfaces, each spaced from one of the side walls of the groove by a clearance. Elastomeric protuberances protrude from each of the side surfaces of the seal ring for non-sealing contact with one of the side walls of the groove.

An earth boring bit has thrust faces with one of the thrust faces being at least partially tilted relative to the other. The bit has a cone rotatably mounted to a bearing pin of the bit body. The thrust faces are in the cone and on an end of the bearing pin. One of the thrust faces is completely flat and perpendicular to the axis of the bearing pin. The other thrust face has a tilted portion that is at a skewed angle relative to the axis. The tilted portion creates converging and diverging zones between the thrust faces.

An earth boring bit has a bearing pin with a sleeve mounted on it. The sleeve is fixed against rotation but able to float relative to the bearing pin. A cone fits over and forms a bearing surface with the sleeve. The sleeve and bearing pin are configured to have a clearance between them that has a forward portion that progressively decreases in a rearward direction. The clearance progressively decreases in a forward direction from the rearward end of the sleeve. The cone and the sleeve are able to tilt in unison with each other relative to the bearing pin when the bit is loaded.

A seal assembly for an earth boring bit uses a magnet to provide a desired contact force. The seal is located between a rotating cone and a stationary bearing pin of the drill bit. The seal has a non rotating metal face that is in sliding engagement with a seal face in the cone that rotates with the cone. The non rotating seal face is provided by a carrier ring that encircles the bearing pin. A magnet is mounted to the carrier ring to provide an attraction force maintaining the carrier ring in contact with the rotating seal face in the cone. An elastomeric seal ring seals between the carrier ring and the bearing pin to prevent rotation of the carrier ring.
