A method of reducing vapor generation in an LNG fueled vehicle is provided. The LNG fueled vehicle includes an LNG fuel system including an external LNG pump. The method includes a step of predicting if the LNG fueled vehicle will be operated during a first forthcoming time period using a controller. If the LNG fueled vehicle will be operated during the first forthcoming time period, as determined by the first predicting step, the method includes cooling the external LNG pump.

System and method for reducing vapor generation in liquefied natural gas fueled vehicle

A power system is disclosed. The power system may have a cryogenic tank configured to hold a supply of liquid fuel, and an engine configured to combust gaseous fuel. The power system may also have a coolant circuit configured to cool the engine, and at least one heat exchanger isolated from the coolant circuit and configured to receive a fluid passing through the engine. The power system may further have a first fuel line extending from the cryogenic tank to the at least one heat exchanger, and a second fuel line extending from the at least one heat exchanger to the engine.

Power system having fuel-based cooling

A fuel system is disclosed for use with an engine. The fuel system may have a tank holding a supply of liquefied fuel and a supply of gaseous fuel boiled off from the liquefied fuel. The fuel system may also have at least one compressor fluidly coupled to the tank for compressing the supply of gaseous fuel and an accumulator fluidly coupled downstream of the at least one compressor for storing the compressed supply of gaseous fuel.

A flow control system for a flow of a cryogenic fluid over a component is provided. The system includes a first tubing containing a first fluid therein and positioned upstream of the component with respect to the flow of the cryogenic fluid. The system includes a second tubing containing a second fluid therein and positioned downstream of the component with respect to the flow of the cryogenic fluid. The system also includes a parameter sensing device fluidly connected to the first tubing and the second tubing for comparing a first parameter associated with the first tubing and a second parameter associated with the second tubing. The system further includes a flow control device coupled to the parameter sensing device to regulate the flow of the cryogenic fluid over the component based, at least in part, on the comparison.

System and method for controlling flow of fluid

A method of operating a cryogenic fuel system for supplying fuel to an engine is provided herein. A cryogenic fuel pump is operated to pump fuel to be supplied to the engine. At least a portion of the pumped fuel is diverted to be supplied to an accumulator, when a fuel demand of the engine is less than a discharge output of the cryogenic fuel pump. Further, the supply of the pumped fuel from the cryogenic fuel pump to the engine and the accumulator is stopped, when a pressure within the accumulator reaches a first predefined pressure limit. Furthermore, the fuel is supplied to the engine from the accumulator, when supply of the pumped fuel from the cryogenic fuel pump to the engine and the accumulator is stopped.

System and method for operating a cryogenic fuel system

A gas production system for producing high pressure gas is disclosed. The gas production system may perform a method for producing high pressure gaseous fuel. The method may include receiving liquefied fuel in a container having an effective volume, reducing the effective volume of the container, and heating the liquefied fuel. The method may also include releasing some gaseous fuel out of the container. The method may further include increasing the effective volume of the container, cooling residual gaseous fuel, and directing liquefied fuel into the container to replace released gaseous fuel. The method may include converting a change in the effective volume of the container to mechanical power.

Gas production system for producing high pressure gas

A fuel system for an engine has a cylinder with an inlet air port, an air box surrounding the inlet air port, and a gaseous fuel injector positioned in the air box and having a nozzle located at the inlet air port. The fuel system also has a gaseous fuel control valve, a fuel supply line fluidly extending from the gaseous fuel control valve to the gaseous fuel injector, a purge valve, and a purge fluid supply line fluidly extending from the purge valve to at least one of the fuel supply line and the gaseous fuel injector. The fuel system also has a return valve and a return line fluidly extending from at least one of the fuel supply line and the gaseous fuel injector.

Purge system for a dual-fuel engine

An engine system having donor cylinders and non-donor cylinders is disclosed. The engine system may have a first intake manifold configured to distribute air into the non-donor cylinders, and a second intake manifold configured to distribute air into the donor cylinders. The engine system may also have a first exhaust manifold configured to discharge exhaust from the non-donor cylinders to the atmosphere, and a second exhaust manifold separate from the first exhaust manifold and configured to recirculate exhaust from the donor cylinders to the first intake manifold. The engine system may further have an orifice disposed in between the first intake manifold and the second intake manifold. The orifice may be configured to regulate a flow rate of fluid flowing from the first intake manifold to the second intake manifold. The engine system may further have a controller configured to selectively control the orifice in response to a desired exhaust gas recirculation operating condition.

Engine system having reduced pressure EGR system

The disclosure is directed to a fuel system for a consist. The fuel system may have a tank located on a tender car of the consist and configured to hold a supply of liquefied gaseous fuel. The fuel system may also have an accumulator located on a daughter locomotive of the consist and configured to hold a supply of pressurized gaseous fuel at a predetermined pressure. The fuel system may further have at least one conduit fluidly connecting the tank to the accumulator and the accumulator to a first engine on a lead locomotive of the consist. The accumulator is configured to supply pressurized gaseous fuel to the first engine when pressure of fluid within the at least one conduit drops below the predetermined pressure of the pressurized gaseous fuel in the accumulator.

Fuel system for consist having daughter locomotive

An engine system is disclosed. The engine system may have an engine including at least one cylinder. Further, the engine system may have a nozzle configured to selectively inject gaseous fuel into the at least one cylinder of the engine. The engine system may also have an intake port configured to direct air for combustion to the at least one cylinder. In addition, the engine system may have exhaust valves associated with the at least one cylinder. The exhaust valves may be configured to direct exhaust from the cylinder to an atmosphere. The exhaust valves may also be configured to close at different times.

Engine system for reducing gaseous fuel slip

An engine system having donor cylinders and non-donor cylinders is disclosed. The engine system may have a first intake manifold configured to distribute air into the non-donor cylinders, and a second intake manifold separate from the first intake manifold and configured to distribute air into the donor cylinders. The engine system may also have a first exhaust manifold configured to discharge exhaust from the non-donor cylinders to the atmosphere, and a second exhaust manifold separate from the first exhaust manifold and configured to recirculate exhaust from the donor cylinders to the first intake manifold. The engine system may further have an orifice configured to regulate a flow rate of air flowing into the second intake manifold, a blower configured to regulate a flow rate of exhaust that is recirculated from the donor cylinders to the first intake manifold, and a controller configured to selectively control at least one of the orifice and the blower in response to a desired exhaust gas recirculation operating condition.

A gaseous fuel system is provided for a machine. The fuel system may have a pump having a body defining an inlet and an outlet. The pump may also have a compressor section in fluid communication with the inlet, a turbine section in fluid communication with the outlet, and a conduit formed between an outlet of the compressor section and an inlet of the turbine section. The fuel system may further have a heat exchanger integral to the conduit, a supply of a liquid fuel in communication with the inlet, and an accumulator in communication with the outlet configured to receive gaseous fuel.

A pressure reducing device is disclosed for use with a gaseous fuel system. The pressure reducing device may include a body defining an inlet and an outlet, and a converging-diverging nozzle formed between the inlet and the outlet. The pressure reducing device may further include a shockwave inducing element disposed within the body between the venture and the outlet, and an airfoil located inside the body upstream of the shockwave inducing element and connected to move the shockwave inducing element.

A control system for an engine including a fuel delivery system and an ignition source is provided. The control system includes a detector, a processor, and at least one actuator. The detector is configured to sense a signal to change from a compression ignited fuel to a spark ignited fuel. The processor is configured to receive the signal from the detector and generate an actuation signal. The actuator is configured to receive the actuation signal, vary an operating speed of the engine, and selectively control at least one of the fuel delivery system and the ignition source.
