There are described methods, systems, and techniques for performing automated drilling of a wellbore. The wellbore is drilled according to one or more drilling parameter targets associated with one or more corresponding drilling parameters. A controlling drilling parameter of the one or more drilling parameters is determined to be outside a threshold window. In response to determining that a stringer has been encountered, one or more controlled drilling parameter targets of the one or more drilling parameter targets are updated. The controlled drilling parameter targets comprise a revolutions per minute (RPM) target and weight-on-bit (WOB) target.

Methods and systems for performing automated drilling of a wellbore

There is described a computer-implemented method of controlling a drilling operation. In particular, there is described a computer-implemented method of determining that a differential pressure is in an oscillating state. In response to determining that the differential pressure is in the oscillating state, a weight on bit setpoint is decreased so as to decrease the differential pressure. There is also described a computer-implemented method of determining a difference between a differential pressure and a target differential pressure. The target differential pressure is less than a differential pressure limit. A weight on bit setpoint is adjusted as a function of the difference between the differential pressure and the target differential pressure so as to adjust the differential pressure and thereby reduce the difference between the differential pressure and the target differential pressure.

Methods, systems, and computer-readable media for performing automated drilling of a wellbore

There are described methods, systems, and techniques for performing automated drilling of a well bore. The well bore is drilled according to one or more drilling parameter targets associated with one or more corresponding drilling parameters. A controlling drilling parameter of the one or more drilling parameters is determined to be outside a threshold window. In response to determining that a stringer has been encountered, one or more controlled drilling parameter targets of the one or more drilling parameter targets are updated. The controlled drilling parameter targets comprise a revolutions per minute (RPM) target and weight-on-bit (WOB) target.

Disclosed are a method and an apparatus for decoding a signal sent from a measurement-while-drilling tool. In order to decode the signal, a decoder implementation that is communicative according to a decoder implementation protocol and that is configured to decode the signal into a decoded signal is instantiated. The decoder implementation protocol is then conformed to a transmission protocol. The signal is sent to the decoder implementation according to the transmission protocol. Because the decoder implementation protocol has been conformed to the transmission protocol, the decoder implementation can receive the signal and can decode it. One way in which the decoder implementation protocol can be conformed to the transmission protocol is through the use of a translation layer between the module that sends the signal to be decoded and the decoder implementation.

Method and apparatus for decoding a signal sent from a measurement-while-drilling tool

A system for directing the drilling of a well at a drill-site includes an instructing unit, an instructed unit, and a central unit. The instructed unit receives drilling instruction from an instructing driller, sends drilling instructions to the central unit, and presents to the instructing driller drilling instructions and instruction confirmations received from the central unit. The instructed unit receives instruction confirmations from an instructed driller, sends instruction confirmations to the central unit, and presents to the instructed driller drilling instructions received from the central unit. The central unit stores and forwards drilling instructions and instruction confirmations to the instructing unit and instructed unit, and generates and stores slide sheet information from the drilling instructions.
