Instrumentation and a method for efficient and reliable assaying and measuring samples. The teachings include an automated self-contained instrument, wherein the samples are located on wells of sample plates, and the instrument includes a plurality of units for processing or storing sample plates. The instrument may includes at least one dispensing unit for dispensing reagents or other assay components to the sample wells, at least two units for simultaneously processing or storing a plurality of sample plates, at least one unit for removing substance from the sample wells, and one or several measurement units for optically measuring samples in at least two measurement modes. Further, the instrument includes a manipulator for moving the sample plates in three orthogonal directions or combinations thereof and for rotating the sample plates in relation to a vertical axis for transferring the sample plates to the units.

Automated instrumentation and method for measurements of samples

A sample handling method, in which the information on the sample to be examined is transferred throughout the entire measuring process by transferring the sample cup. The sample cups are handled in two independently operating drums, in which case at least two different handling phases can be carried out simultaneously in the measuring device. The diagnostic measuring device comprises a cassette drum, on the circumference of which the sample cup cassettes containing sample cups have been placed. The sample cup is fed to the first handling drum, which is simultaneously an incubation drum. After that the sample cup is transferred to a second handling drum, where washing, drying, measuring and discharge of the sample cup are carried out. The drums have been placed near each other, overlapping so that the transfers of the sample cup can be performed directly from one drum to another by means of transfer plungers.

Method for handling samples and diagnostic measuring device

A shaker/incubator (10) comprising an even number of shaking planes (11) placed one on top of the other, which can be brought into a shaking motion by means of a rotating shaft (15) with eccentrics (20) attached thereto. Every second shaking plane is in the same phase of the shaking motion. The shaking planes are connected to each other by three vertical shafts (14, 15, 16) or by one vertical shaft (15) disposed in the middle so that the shaking plane connected to a toothed gear (24) rolls along a toothed rim (26) formed in the body (25).
