Aspects of the current patent document include systems and methods to adaptive bandwidth throttling, for example, for use in data backup systems and data recovery systems. In embodiments, bandwidth estimation can be performed while sending data. In embodiments, the bandwidth estimation is used in data backups to send data to be backed up. In embodiments, a server performs network bandwidth estimation by receiving relatively small data packets and estimating bandwidth until bandwidth reliability conditions are satisfied.

Systems and methods for adaptive bandwidth throttling

Techniques for file system recovery are disclosed. In one particular exemplary embodiment, the techniques may be realized as a method for file system recovery comprising starting a recovery process for a failed node, utilizing the recovery process to read one or more committed but un-applied transactions from storage associated with the failed node, and recreating the one or more committed but un-applied transactions in memory associated with the recovery process.

Various embodiments of a system and method for performing a file system operation on a specified storage tier are disclosed. Input specifying a file system operation and a pathname may be received. The pathname may include a plurality of components, including one or more directory components and a storage tier component. The pathname may be analyzed to determine a directory specified by the one or more directory components and a storage tier specified by the storage tier component. The file system operation may be performed, where the file system operation operates on the first directory and the first storage tier. In a further embodiment, the components of the pathname may also include a filename component. Thus, the pathname may be further analyzed to determine a filename specified by the filename component. The file system operation may operate on the first filename, the first directory, and the first storage tier.

System and method for performing a file system operation on a specified storage tier

A method and system of providing replica files within a fileset is disclosed. According to one embodiment, a method is provided which comprises associating a source file and a replica file of the source file within a fileset, wherein the replica file of the source file comprises a virtual copy of the source file. In another embodiment wherein the source file comprises a metadata file system object and the replica file of the source file comprises a replica metadata file system object, the associating comprises generating a reference within the replica metadata file system object to the metadata file system object.

Techniques for creating checkpoints are disclosed. In one particular exemplary embodiment, the techniques may be realized as a method for creating file system checkpoints comprising the steps of modifying a first data block and a second data block with a first transaction, associating the first data block with a first stamp, and associating the second data block with a second stamp, wherein the first stamp and the second stamp are substantially similar.

A client computer system of a cluster may send a request to create a file in a cluster file system. A server may create a file in response to the information and allocate space in a storage to the file. If a request to write to the file is received within a predetermined amount of time, the write may complete without requiring that additional operations be performed to allocate space to the file. If a write to the file is not received within the predetermined amount of time, the space allocated to the file when it was created may be de-allocated. The file system may additionally or alternatively perform a method for opening a file while delaying an associated truncation of space allocated to the file. If a request to write to the file is received within a predetermined amount of time, the write may be performed in the space already allocated to the file.

File system and methods for performing file create and open operations with efficient storage allocation

Method, system, and apparatus for maintaining consistent images of metadata and data in a file system or other data journaling software stored on a temporal volume are presented. An intent log is maintained of all data and metadata modifying transactions, which is then relayed either asynchronously or form a last known consistent checkpoint to a requested checkpoint thereby rendering the requested checkpoint data and metadata consistent.

A method for performing data backup operations may involve copying data to be archived from a source system and copying file properties from the source system. The file properties may include archiving properties for at least one data file among the copied data. The data file may then be archived in accordance with the archiving properties. The copied data may be copied from a first host onto a second host. The file properties may also be copied from the first host onto the second host. The file properties may be stored as file attributes or metadata on the source system and may be copied to an archiving server along with the file. Additionally, a method for performing off-host processing of data may involve copying data to be processed from a source system, copying processing instructions from the source system and processing the copied data according to the copied processing instructions.

System and method for controlling off-host policies

A method for reading data in a block-level single-instance storage system may involve receiving a first address of a data block, retrieving a signature corresponding to the first address, and reading data from a second address corresponding to the signature. A storage system may include a storage manager and first and second lookup tables. The storage manager may interface with an application (such as a database system or a file system) that uses a first set of identifiers for data blocks. The storage manager may use a second set of identifiers for the data blocks, and translates between the first and second identifiers using the lookup tables. The first lookup table indexes data block signatures according to the first set of identifiers. The second lookup table indexes the second set of identifiers according to the data block signatures. The second lookup table may be pruned to provide single instance storage.

Block-level and hash-based single-instance storage

A method, system, and apparatus to encapsulate one or more file systems in a union of file systems without modifying or copying information in each file directory entry in each file system are presented. In one embodiment, this is accomplished in part by linking an inode list file from the file system to be encapsulated with an inode list file of the union of file systems, and merging a free extent map of the to-be-encapsulated file system with the free extent map file of the union file system.

System and method for partial file migration in file systems by Hierarchical Storage Management (HSM) applications. Embodiments may provide an automated mechanism for HSM applications to partially migrate files by migrating the inactive parts of the files to offline storage while leaving the active parts of the files on disk and active in the file system. In embodiments, access information including timestamps may be recorded and maintained at the subfile level to enable detection of inactivity at the subfile level and hence partial file migration by migrating only the inactive parts of files. The parts of files may be extents, blocks, or ranges. The access information may be recorded and maintained in-memory only, in a separate file on disk, or in extent descriptors for the files.

A method may involve assigning each of a plurality of freelists and a plurality of hashlists used to implement a cache to one of a plurality of lock groups and acquiring one of a plurality of locks. Objects on each freelist and hashlist that are assigned to the same lock group are allocated from the same one of a plurality of memory allocation pools. Each lock group is associated with a respective one of the plurality of locks. Acquiring the lock locks a freelist and several hashlists included in an associated lock group of the plurality of lock groups.
