A method of manufacturing a glassy optical preform is disclosed that includes providing a preform having a silica soot layer and then sintering the soot layer into a glassy layer, and water is selectively added to the preform by exposing the soot layer to a gaseous water-containing atmosphere during the sintering step. The preform is controllably doped with water.

An optical waveguide fiber or body having a doped outer region which can be utilized in an optical coupler, a preform which can serve as the precursor for the fiber, an optical coupler, and methods of making same. Water, for example in the form of HO and/or DO, may be added to the cladding of the optical waveguide fiber or body.

Optical fiber and preform, method of manufacturing same, and optical component made therefrom

Disclosed is a method of making a hydrogen resistant optical waveguide fiber. The soot preform is heated and immersed in a metal halide gas. A reduced metal species is thus incorporated into the glass soot prior to sintering or consolidation of the soot preform. A hydrogen absorption band around 1530 nm is substantially eliminated from waveguides made from a precursor gas treated preform.

A dispersion compensating single mode optical waveguide fiber designed to change the wavelength window of operation of a link from 1310 nm to 1550 nm. The dispersion compensating waveguide fiber is characterized by a core glass region refractive index profile comprised of at least three segments. The segment on the waveguide center has a positive relative refractive index. At least one segment, spaced apart from, the waveguide centerline has a negative relative refractive.

A sintered dense glass, alumina-doped optical fiber preform is stretched and is then heated to a temperature of 1490-1495&deg; C. to remove bubbles without causing crystallization. Improved single-mode optical waveguide fibers having a central core region, surrounded by an inner cladding region through which light at a chosen signal wavelength will propagate to an appreciable degree along with propagation of same in the central core region, the inner core region further surrounded by an outer cladding region, the improvement comprising germanium dioxide in the inner cladding region at a concentration within the range of about 0.005 percent by weight to about 1 percent by weight of said inner cladding region, effective to significantly reduce the concentration of oxygen atoms in the inner cladding region which are available to form defects that cause hydrogen-induced attenuation. Also provided are core preforms, overclad preforms, and processes for making the fibers, core preforms and overclad preforms.

Optical fiber resistant to hydrogen-induced attenuation

A single mode optical waveguide having reduced polarization mode dispersion and a method for making such a waveguide is disclosed. Perturbations are introduced into the waveguide core to couple power between the two polarization modes. A model calculation shows that the perturbation length may be of the order of the correlation length. The inventive waveguide is robust in that polarization mode dispersion is reduced even if perturbations are impressed on the fiber after manufacture.

Disclosed is a single mode optical waveguide fiber having periodic perturbations in the core to provide a birefringence which mixes the polarization modes of launched light. In addition, perturbations are introduced into the core which serve to manage total dispersion. The total dispersion of pre-selected segments of the waveguide are caused to change sign so that the sum of products, total dispersion times length, algebraically add to a pre-selected value. The two distinct core perturbation types serve to control both polarization mode dispersion and total dispersion. Methods for making the subject waveguide are also discussed.

Control of dispersion in an optical waveguide

A single mode optical waveguide fiber having low, non-zero dispersion over a pre-selected wavelength range is disclosed. The refractive index profile of the core is characterized in that the core includes a plurality of distinct regions, each having an index profile, and a radius or width. By adjusting the index profile sizes and shapes of the plurality of core regions, a waveguide fiber may be made having a set of properties tailored for a high performance telecommunication system. In particular, dispersion slope can be maintained less than 0.05 ps/nm.sup.2 -km and absolute magnitude of total dispersion maintained in the range of 0.5 to 3.5 ps/nm-km over a pre-selected wavelength range. The zero dispersion wavelength is outside the pre-selected wavelength range and the cut off wavelength and mode field diameter are controlled to target values.

Controlled dispersion optical waveguide

Disclosed is a family of dispersion compensating optical fibers that are adapted for use with conventional single-mode transmission fibers that are optimized for zero dispersion operation at a wavelength in the range from 1290 nm to 1330 nm to form a transmission link suitable for low dispersion operation in the 1520-1565 nm wavelength window. The dispersion compensating fibers are capable of providing a dispersion more negative than -20 ps/nm-km and attenuation less than 1 dB/km at wavelengths in the 1520-1565 nm region. Certain of the dispersion compensating fibers also exhibit a dispersion versus wavelength relationship having a negative slope in the 1520-1565 nm region, to compensate for the dispersion versus wavelength slope of the transmission fiber. The dispersion compensating fiber can be advantageously combined with a fiber amplifier to form a compensator that is adapted to overcome attenuation introduced into the system by the dispersion compensating fiber. In one embodiment, the dispersion compensating fiber is also a distributed fiber amplifier.

Dispersion compensating devices and systems

A vapor deposition method for making preforms from which optical waveguide fibers are drawn wherein at least a first precursor compound is oxidized at one oxidation site and at least a second precursor compound, which is different from the first precursor compound, is oxidized at a second oxidation site. The method is particularly applicable in cases where the first and second precursor compounds are chemically incompatible with one another or where the flow rate of the second precursor compound is substantially lower than the flow rate of the first precursor compound.

Method of making optical waveguide preforms

An optical waveguide fiber with improved bend loss performance while maintaining cutoff wavelength, .lambda..sub.c, and zero dispersion wavelength, .lambda..sub.0, in practical operating ranges. The fiber includes an inner core region with a refractive index delta higher than the rest of the core and a reduced diffusion tail at the core/cladding interface. Optionally, a ring at the outer portion of the core is provided to compensate for increased .lambda..sub.0 which results from the higher inner core refractive index delta. This ring also contributes to the reduced diffusion tail at the core/cladding interface.
