One embodiment of the present subject matter includes an apparatus which includes a capacitor stack, including at least one substantially planar capacitor electrode, a case having a first opening and a second opening, the first opening sized for passage of the capacitor stack, the second opening defined by walls having a first thickness, a cover substantially conforming to the first opening and sealingly connected to the first opening and a plate substantially conforming to the second opening, the plate sealingly connected to the second opening, the plate having a second thickness which is approximately greater than the first thickness of the walls defining the second opening, wherein the capacitor stack is disposed in the case.

Method and apparatus for openings in a capacitor case

A flat capacitor includes a case having a feedthrough hole, a capacitor stack located within the case, a coupling member having a base surface directly attached to the capacitor stack and having a portion extending through the feedthrough hole, the coupling member having a mounting hole, a feedthrough conductor having a portion mounted within the mounting hole, and a sealing member adjacent the feedthrough hole and the feedthrough conductor for sealing the feedthrough hole. Other aspects of the invention include various implantable medical devices, such as pacemakers, defibrillators, and cardioverters, incorporating one or more features of the exemplary feedthrough assembly.

In one aspect, a method of interconnecting two or more foils of a capacitor, the method comprising connecting together one or more anode connection members of one or more anode foils and one or more cathode connection members of one or more cathode foils and electrically isolating the one or more anode foils from the one or more cathode foils.

A capacitor including a capacitor stack. The capacitor includes one or more substantially planar anode layers, and one or more substantially planar cathode layers. The capacitor includes a case with a first opening and a second opening, the first opening sized for passage of the capacitor stack and the second opening defined by walls having a first thickness. Additionally, the capacitor has a cover substantially conforming to the first opening and sealingly connected to the first opening, and a plate substantially conforming to the second opening, the plate adapted for attachment of a terminal, and sealingly connected to the second opening. The plate has a second thickness which is approximately greater than the first thickness of the walls defining the second opening. The capacitor stack is disposed in the case, and the terminal is in electrical connection with the case and at least one capacitor electrode.

Foil structures for use in a capacitor with an anode foil and a cathode foil stacked together

In one aspect, a method of manufacturing a capacitor includes disposing one or more conductive layers of a first electrode stack in a recess of an alignment mechanism, where the recess is positioned relative to two or more alignment elements. The method further includes placing a separator over the one or more conductive layers where an outer edge of the separator contacts the two or more alignment elements. In one embodiment, a capacitor includes anode and cathode foils having offsetting edge portions. In one embodiment, a multiple tab cathode for a flat capacitor. A plurality of cathode tabs are portioned into a plurality of cathode tab groups positioned in different locations along the edge of the capacitor stack to reduce the amount of space required for connecting and routing the cathode tabs.

In one aspect, a method of interconnecting two or more foils of a capacitor, the method comprising connecting together one or more anode connection members of one or more anode foils and one or more cathode connection members of one or more cathode foils and electrically isolating the one or more anode foils from the one or more cathode foils. In one aspect, a capacitor having a first anode layer, a second anode layer, a cathode layer between the first anode layer and the second anode layer, a first separator layer between the first anode layer and the cathode layer, a second separator layer between the second anode layer and the cathode layer; and a conductive interconnect between the first anode layer and the second anode layer, the conductive interconnect passing through a cathode hole in the cathode; wherein the conductive interconnect has a cross section which is smaller than the cathode hole and the conductive interconnect is placed to avoid direct electrical contact with the cathode layer and wherein the first anode and the second anode are electrically connected through the conductive interconnect.
