Various connection units are disclosed. The connection unit can be configured to straighten a flow of air, such as to reduce the distance before the flow of air becomes substantially laminar. The connection unit can include a drag reduction unit. The drag reduction unit can be configured to redirect airflow to the center of the connection unit. The connection unit can include a wake diverting component configured to lift air away from the periphery of the connection unit and/or redirect the airflow towards a radial center connection unit.

Various components and methods related to a leading edge assembly are disclosed. The leading edge assembly can include an outer strike shell and a foam core. The foam core can be located inside the outer strike shell. The leading edge assembly can include a heating element with a plurality of sensors and wires. A method of manufacturing a leading edge assembly can include forming a composite layer, applying a metallic layer to the composite layer, installing an electronic device, and inserting a foam core into a cavity bounded by the composite layer and/or the electronic device.

Various methods of diagnosing defects and disbonds in devices and materials are disclosed. In some embodiments, the methods involve cooling a portion of a material or device, heating a portion of the material or device with a heating instrument, terminating the application of heat to the material or device, and imaging the material or device using a thermal imager after heat is removed. In certain variants, disbonds and/or defects can be visualized as hotter areas and spots on the material through the thermal image.
