A mounting arrangement for clamping plastic workpieces such as replacement engine and transmission covers in the automotive aftermarket. The mounting arrangement includes a metal eyelet crimped over an annular bead on the workpiece and having a flat central portion with a mounting opening. An annular metal spacer is captured on and carried by the eyelet surrounding the mounting opening to position the head of a mounting bolt above the plane of the workpiece for access by a socket wrench or the like.

Mounting arrangement for plastic workpieces

In an oil pump inlet screen assembly adapted to be immersed in an oil sump and comprising a filter screen including a housing and a lift pipe adapted to be inserted at one end into an oil pump opening, the improvement wherein the housing and lift pipe are molded integrally of plastic material, and wherein the screen assembly further comprises a metal eyelet received over the pipe end and adapted to be press-fitted into the pump opening. The eyelet includes coaxial cylindrical portions respectively disposed internally and externally of the pipe end and an external flanged end portion which captures a circumferential rib on the outside of the pipe both to retain the eyelet on the pipe end and to function as a stop to limit press-fit insertion of the pipe end into the pump opening.

Method of assembling pipe joint

In the fluid circulation system of a transmission having a prespecified minimum operating temperature and a minimum fluid flow requirement for operation at the minimum operating temperature, a transmission fluid filter comprising a housing having a fluid inlet and outlet, and a filter element supported in the housing. The filter element is a composite assembly of a fine filtering medium such as a phenolic resin-impregnated felt having an opening therein, and a coarse filtering media such as polyester mesh secured over the opening so as to provide through the respective media parallel continuous fluid flow paths. The surface area ratio of coarse to fine filter media is the minimum ratio sufficient to permit minimum flow through the coarse filtering media at the prespecified minimum operating temperature.

Transmission fluid filter

In an oil pump inlet screen assembly adapted to be immersed in an oil pump and comprising a filter screen including a housing and a lift pipe adapted to be inserted at one end into an oil pump opening, the improvement wherein the housing and lift pipe are molded integrally of plastic material, and wherein the screen assembly further comprises a metal eyelet received over the pipe end and adapted to be press-fitted into the pump opening. The eyelet includes coaxial cylindrical portions respectively disposed internally and externally of the pipe end and an external flanged end portion which captures a circumferential rib on the outside of the pipe both to retain the eyelet on the pipe end and to function as a stop to limit press-fit insertion of the pipe end into the pump opening.

Metal-to-plastic pipe joint

A transmission fluid filter comprising a metal base pan and a filter frame of thermoplastic construction which supports a filter medium in spaced relation to the base pan. Axially aligned openings in the frame and base pan received bolts for mounting the filter to a transmission housing. In accordance with the invention, a metal eyelet is crimped around a circumferential bead in the filter frame and has a central flat portion for absorbing the clamping stresses exerted by the mounting bolts remotely of the bead and crimp to permit high bolt retention stresses while relieving the problem of plastic creep and deformation.

Oil pump inlet screen assembly

A pipe joint specifically adapted for an oil lamp inlet screen, and a method of assembly therefor, comprising a metal pipe adapted at one end to be connected to an oil pump housing and a filter screen including a molded plastic screen housing having an aperture adapted to receive the other pipe end. A metal eyelet is molded into the plastic housing and extends therefrom to embrace a circumferential rib formed on the outside surface of the pipe. An annular resilient sealing ring surrounds the pipe and is captured by the eyelet in sealing compression between the circumferential rib and the housing.

Pipe joint and method of assembly

A transmission fluid filter having a fluid outlet comprising a sheet metal base member with a plurality of upstanding spaced support bosses. A polyester fiber mesh is molded into a plastic filter frame which includes a peripheral edge for attachment to the base member and a plurality of ribs extending generally from the region of the fluid outlet to the frame edge and supported by the bosses to form a fluid cavity between the mesh and the base member.

A metal eyelet is molded into the plastic housing and extends therefrom to embrace a circumferential rib formed on the outside surface of the pipe. An annular resilient sealing ring surrounds the pipe and is captured by the eyelet in sealing compression between the circumferential rib and the housing.
