Bone distraction devices and methods of using same

An implant includes: an inner rod having an outer surface; an outer rod in telescopic engagement with the inner rod, the outer rod having a threaded inner surface in axial slidable engagement with the outer surface of the inner rod; the inner rod and the outer rod each having an end configured for attachment to bone; a rotational actuator housed within the inner rod; and a lead screw in axial alignment with the rotational actuator and rotationally coupled thereto, the lead screw in threaded engagement with the threaded inner surface of the outer rod, whereby rotational motion of the actuator is converted into linear motion, resulting in telescopic changes in the overall axial length of the device.

Bone elongating devices and methods of use

A system for evaluating the evolution of the structure of a subject's bone, the system including an implantable medical device including an implant body intended to be attached to the bone of the subject and at least one reflector coupled to the implant body, the reflector being configured to reflect an electromagnetic signal and being embedded in a surrounding tissue of the subject when the implant body is attached to the subject's bone and a calculation module configured to compute a parameter representative of the structure of the subject's bone, wherein the parameter is computed from a reflected signal corresponding to a reflection, on the reflector embedded in the surrounding tissue of the subject, of an excitation signal including at least one frequency in the characteristic frequency range of the reflector, the reflected signal being representative of at least one electrical property of the surrounding tissue.

The present invention relates to an implantable bone distraction device () for distracting osteotomically separated bone sections ('), said implantable distraction device () comprising a first block (), a second block (&#x2032;), and an actuator () including means for adjusting the space between the two blocks, enabling distraction between the first bone section () and the second bone section (&#x2032;). The implantable bone distraction device () further comprises at least one vibration sensor () arranged in an area located between the first block () and the second block (&#x2032;) and oriented in order to measure a vibration response of a medium comprising the implantable bone distraction device ().

Implantable distraction device

An implantable bone elongation device including an inner rod defining an internal cavity housing a rotational actuator having an output shaft connected to a lead screw disposed at the end of the inner rod and in threaded engagement with a threaded inner surface of an outer rod. Rotation of the lead screw converts rotation motion into linear motion resulting in telescopic movement of the outer rod relative to the inner rod. Rotational motion is converted into linear motion by components disposed in a parallel configuration thereby minimizing the overall length of the bone elongating device while maintaining a maximum stroke length. In various embodiments, additional components, such as electronic circuit boards, electrical power supply or battery power source, may be housed within the internal cavity formed by the inner rod. The bone elongation device of the present invention may be affixed to a bone in a variety of configurations including implantation into a medullary cavity of the bone, attached to an outer surface of the bone, or attached to the bone as an extramedullary plate.

A implantable bone distraction device for distracting osteotomically separated bone sections includes a first block, a second block, and an actuator including elements for adjusting the space between the two blocks, a vibration sensor arranged in an area located between the first block and the second block and oriented in order to measure a vibration response of a medium of the implantable bone distraction device. A medical monitoring device includes a receiver for receiving data from an implantable bone distraction device, corresponding to a mechanical vibration response of a medium; a calculator for computing from the received data a distraction indicator by: (i) determining a vibration pattern of the medium from the measured vibration response; (ii) analyzing the evolution of a value of the vibration pattern from the measured vibration response during a first period; and (iii) generating a distraction indicator when the value exceeds a predefined threshold.

Disclosed is an invasive intervertebral fusion cage, the intervertebral fusion cage including: a vibration sensor; and a frame configured to support surrounding tissues used to create a bone fusion process; wherein the vibration sensor is integral with the frame in order to measure the mechanical vibrations the vibrations arising from the medium consisting of the frame, the surrounding tissues and/or the fusionned bone, and wherein the intervertebral fusion cage does not include a vibration excitation transducer. Also disclosed is a remote medical monitoring device including a receiver for receiving data from an intervertebral fusion cage, reflecting the mechanical vibrations of a medium and a calculator computing from the received data a medium indicator by: determining at least one vibration pattern of the received data; comparing the at least one vibration pattern with at least one reference model; generating a medium indicator in function of the comparing step.
