Rory A. Cooper, an American bioengineer, has transformed mobility for people with disabilities. As a U.S. Army veteran and wheelchair user himself, he pioneered innovations in wheelchair technology. His inventions include the Ergonomic Dual Surface Wheelchair Pushrim, which reduces repetitive stress injuries, and the Variable Compliance Joystick with Compensation Algorithms, enabling safe powered mobility. Cooper’s work has improved independence and social inclusion for millions. He was inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame in 2023.
