Luc Montagnier, born on August 18, 1932, was a French virologist and a co-discoverer of the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV). His groundbreaking work in 1983 led to the development of diagnostic tests for HIV, which has been identified as the cause of AIDS. Montagnier’s contributions to virology extended beyond HIV; he significantly advanced cancer research and explored the effects of interferon on viruses. In 2008, he shared the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine with Françoise Barré-Sinoussi for his pivotal discovery.
