Ioannis V. Yannas, born on April 14, 1935, is a National Inventors Hall of Fame® (NIHF) Inductee. Alongside John Burke, he developed the first commercially reproducible artificial skin that encouraged and facilitated new growth. Their innovative skin, made from polymers sourced from shark cartilage and collagen from cowhide, mimicked the dermal and epidermal layers of natural skin. Notably, it encouraged native skin cell growth, significantly benefiting burn victims. Marketed as Integra, this life-saving technology received FDA approval in 1996. Yannas, a physical chemist and engineer, continues his research in regenerative medicine at MIT, exploring areas like organ and nerve regrowth.
