Prolific inventors in Germany include Karl Benz (1844-1929), who is credited with inventing the first practical petrol-powered car; Gottlieb Daimler (1834-1900), the creator of the first gasoline powered engine for cars; Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen (1845-1923), who discovered X-rays; Otto Lilienthal (1848-1896), who was an aviation pioneer and inventor of gliders; Johannes Gutenberg (1393-1468) is famous for creating the first moveable type printing press; Alfred Krupp (1812-1887), developed steel technologies; and Heinrich Rudolf Hertz (1857-1894), who discovered electromagnetic radiation.
