Prolific inventors in the USA include Thomas Edison (1847 – 1931), who is credited with inventing the phonograph, the motion picture camera, and the first commercially practical incandescent light bulb; George Westinghouse (1846 – 1914), who created the railway air brake, a pioneer of the electrical industry; Benjamin Franklin (1705 – 1790), who developed lightning rod, bifocals, and the Franklin stove; Garrett Morgan (1877 – 1963), who invented a traffic light. Robert Fulton (1765 – 1815), developed the first commercially successful steamboat; Nikola Tesla (1856 – 1943), the inventor of the alternating current (AC) electrical system and the Tesla coil; Henry Ford (1863 – 1947), created the first automobile that middle-class Americans could afford. Eli Whitney Jr. (1765 – 1825), is famous for inventing the cotton gin; Orville and Wilbur Wright (1871 – 1948; 1867 – 1912), aviation pioneers, who invented the first successful motor-operated airplane.
