Prolific inventors in the Netherlands include Zacharias Janssen (1585 – 1632), who is associated with the invention of the optical telescope and/or the compound microscope; Christiaan Huygens (1629 – 1695), who improved the design of telescopes and invented the pendulum clock; Jan van der Heyden (1637 – 1712), he worked a lot on the technical and organizational improvement of the fire services of Amsterdam and was responsible for the street lighting project using oil lamps; Willem Johan Kolff (1911 – 2009), was a pioneer of hemodialysis, artificial heart, as well as in the entire field of artificial organs. He made his major discoveries in the field of dialysis for kidney failure during the Second World War. Jaap Haartsen (1963), is best known for his role in producing the specification for Bluetooth.
