Prolific inventors in Switzerland include George de Mestral (1907 – 1990), who is associated with the invention of the hook and loop fastener, which he named Velcro; Daniel Bovet (1907 – 1992), is best known for his discovery of antihistamines which are used in allergy medication; Wilhelm His Sr. (1831 – 1904), who invented the microtome; Johannes Friedrich Miescher (1844 – 1895), he isolated nucleic acid in 1869 and also identified protamine; Eduard Locher (1840 – 1910), he devised the Locher rack railway system, patented in 1879. This innovative cogwheel railway technology enabled trains to climb steep inclines with enhanced safety and efficiency.
