Prolific inventors in France include Louis Pasteur (1822 – 1895), who is credited with the discoveries of the principles of vaccinationmicrobial fermentation, and pasteurization; René Laennec (1781 – 1826), who invented the stethoscope in 1816; Blaise Pascal (1623 – 1662), his inventions include mechanical calculator, the hydraulic press, primitive form of roulette and the syringe; Montgolfier brothers – Joseph-Michel and Jacques-Étienne  (1740 – 1810; 1745 – 1799), aviation pioneers, balloonists and paper manufacturers, they invented the Montgolfière-style hot air balloon, globe aérostatique; Louis Braille (1809 – 1852) was an educator and the inventor of a reading and writing system, named braille after him, intended for use by visually impaired people.
