Prolific inventors in Australia include David Warren (1925 – 2010), who invented and developed the flight data recorder and cockpit voice recorder (also known as FDR, CVR and “the black box”); Alice Elizabeth Anderson (1897 – 1926), who created the car creeper, the ‘Anderson get out and under board’, a board on castor-wheels, for use, when working under the car although she did not apply for a patent at the time; Charles K. Bliss (1897 – 1985) was a chemical engineer and semiotician, best known as the inventor of Blissymbols, an ideographic writing system; Howard Florey (1898 – 1968), co-discovered of penicillin; David Unaipon (1872-1967), known as the “Australian Leonardo da Vinci”, he patented several inventions, including an improved handpiece for shearing sheep and a centrifugal motor, an anti-gravitational device, the multi-radial wheel.
