Republicans Are Inventors, Democrats Are Innovators |
This summary, is from a recent Bloomberg opinion piece, written by Tyler Cowen, a Bloomberg Opinion columnist, professor of economics at George Mason University, and host of the Marginal Revolution Blog. Full article can be found here.
Does it matter which political party your urologist belongs to? You might not think so, but the divide between Republicans and Democrats permeates various professions. For instance, oil workers and petroleum engineers lean Republican, while environmentalists, librarians, and bartenders support Democrats. Truck drivers, farmers, and urologists tend to lean right, while pediatricians and bartenders lean left.
Bartenders, often younger and more open, favor Democrats. Truck drivers, spending long hours on the road, might be influenced by talk radio, nudging them rightward. Small-business owners typically lean Republican, likely due to concerns about taxes. Academics, in contrast, lean Democratic, valuing support for science and education over profit margins.
Interestingly, inventors also show partisan tendencies. In 2020, 37% of inventors identified as Republicans, compared to 34% as Democrats. This might relate to the entrepreneurial spirit and aspirations of becoming small-business moguls. Republicans often patent new technologies, while Democrats focus on climate change solutions.
In conclusion, while conservatives dominate the patent world, Democrats have a stronghold in innovative tech sectors, potentially steering the future economy. The political leanings of professionals highlight the intersection of career paths and political affiliations
