Inventor Recognitions with Centurion Plus Utility Patents as of April 4, 2023

Our goal is to recognize and celebrate the pioneering inventors who have reached noteworthy milestones in their fields this week (April 4, 2023).

Young Kil Kim

received the B.S. and M.S. degrees in electrical engineering at Kwangwoon University, Seoul, Korea, in 2003 and 2005, respectively.

From 2005 to 2010, he worked at the System IC Laboratory of CTO affiliation of LG Electronics, Seoul, Korea; as a senior research engineer for Mobile AMOLED and LCD Driver IC.

Young Kim is currently a research staff member at Samsung Advanced Institute of Technology, Yongin, Korea. His main research interests are currently in medical image sensors.

Patent №11621440 (Apr. 4, 2023) – Composition for forming an insulating layer for lithium secondary battery and method of preparing electrode for lithium secondary battery using the same.

Hong-Sil Jeong

received a B.S. degree in electronics and electrical engineering from Hanyang University, Seoul, South Korea, in 2001. An M.S. degree in electronics and electrical engineering from the Pohang University of Science and Technology (POSTECH), Pohang, South Korea, in 2003.

She is currently pursuing a Ph.D. degree with the College of Information and Communication Engineering, at Sungkyunkwan University, Suwon, South Korea. Since 2003, she has been with Samsung Electronics, where she has been involved in the research and development of wireless communication systems, including 3GPP NR 5G communication standards.

She is currently a Principal Engineer with Samsung Electronics. Her current research interests include coding theory and digital communication/broadcasting systems.

Patent № 11622345 (Apr. 4, 2023) – Method and apparatus for transmitting/receiving control information in a wireless communication system.

Donald W. Schmidt

IT Applications Manager, IT Director, IT Project Manager, IT Program Manager, IT Technical Manager, MIS Manager.

Schmidt received his B.S. degree (1978) in Business, Computer Science from the University of Nebraska at Omaha. M.S. degree in Computer Science Management from Creighton University (1982).

Daniel Keith Van Ostrand

Skilled in Display Technology, Consumer Electronics, Management, Optics, and Start-ups. Strong business development professional with a BA focused in Math, Computer Science from MId-America Nazarene University.

Patent № 11620014 (Apr. 4, 2023) –  Segmented ground plane within an active matrix display with concurrent touch and display operations.

Vittorio Castelli

Mr. Castelli received the Laurea degree in electrical engineering from Politecnico di Milano in 1988, with a thesis in bioengineering. The MS degree in electrical engineering in 1990, the MS degree in statistics in 1994, and the Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering in 1995 from Stanford University, with a dissertation in information theory and statistical classification.

In 1995, he joined as a postdoctoral fellow at the IBM T.J. Watson Research Center, where he became a research staff member in 1996.

From 1996 to 1998, he was the coinvestigator of NASA/CAN project no. NCC5-101.

Dr. Castelli received an Outstanding Innovation Award from IBM in 2000 for his major contributions to the IBM/NASA digital library project and several patent application and invention awards. He has published papers on statistical classification, data compression, image processing, multimedia databases, database mining, and computer-assisted instruction, and he has edited a book about image databases. He is a member of Sigma Xi, the IEEE, the IEEE IT Society, and the American Statistical Association.

Dr. Castelli is currently Senior Manager, Applied Science at Amazon Web Services (AWS)
