Famous Inventors Born in November!

John Montagu, 4th Earl of Sandwich

Date of Birth: November 13, 1718

Profession:  British statesman.

Notable Works: While not an inventor per se, the Fourth Earl of Sandwich is famously associated with popularizing the concept of the sandwich. His innovation in food consumption forever changed how people enjoy meals on the go.

Robert Fulton

Date of Birth: November 14, 1765

Profession: American engineer and inventor.

Notable Works: Robert Fulton is best known for developing the first commercially successful steamboat, the North River Steamboat (also known as Clermont). In 1807, that steamboat travelled on the Hudson River with passengers from New York City to Albany and back again, a round trip of 300 nautical miles (560 kilometres), in 62 hours. The success of his steamboat changed river traffic and trade on major American rivers.

Eugene Paul Wigner

Date of Birth: November 17, 1902

Profession: Hungarian-American mathematician and theoretical physicist

Notable Works: Mr. Wigner built the foundation for the theory of symmetries in quantum mechanics and introduced the Wigner D-matrix in 1927. He received the Nobel Prize in 1963 for his extensive contributions to the theory of the atomic nucleus and elementary particles through his discovery and application of fundamental symmetry principles.

Patrick Maynard Stuart Blackett

Date of Birth: November 18, 1897

Profession: British experimental physicist.

Notable Works: Mr. Blackett was noted for his research on cosmic rays, cloud chambers and palaeomagnetism. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1948 for his extensive investigation of cosmic rays with the use of his invention of the counter-controlled cloud chamber. In 1925 he became the first person to prove that radioactivity could cause the nuclear transmutation of one chemical element to another.

James Batcheller Sumner

Date of Birth: November 19, 1887

Profession: an American chemist

Notable Works: Mr. Sumner received the Nobel Prize along with John Howard Northrop and Wendell Tanley for the discovery of the crystallization of enzymes. He is also noted as the first person to prove enzymes are proteins. The enzyme he worked with was urease, which he isolated from jack beans. Sumner’s work was unsuccessful for many years and many of his colleagues were doubtful, believing that what he was trying to achieve was impossible, but in 1926 he demonstrated that urease could be isolated and crystallized

Earl Wilbur Sutherland Jr.

Date of Birth: November 19, 1915

Profession: American biochemist and pharmacologist

Notable Works: Mr. Sutherland discovered the mechanism of the actions of hormones which led him to win the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1971 – “for his discoveries concerning the mechanisms of the action of hormones”, especially epinephrine, via second messengers, namely cyclic adenosine monophosphate, or cyclic AMP.

Henry Taube

Date of Birth: November 30, 1915

Profession: American famous chemistry scientists.

Notable Works: Mr. Taube researched that both ruthenium and osmium are highly capable of back bonding. In 1983, he received the Nobel Prize for his immense work in the technique of electron-transfer reactions, specifically in metal complexes. His research focused on redox reactions, transition metals and the use of isotopically labeled  compounds to follow reactions.

Jagadish Chandra Bose

Date of Birth: November 30, 1858

Profession: A polymath, physicist, biologist.

Notable Works: Mr. Bose was a pioneer in the investigation of radio microwave optics, made significant contributions to botany, and was a major force behind the expansion of experimental science on the Indian subcontinent. Bose is considered the father of Bengali science fiction. He invented the crescograph, a device for measuring the growth of plants. A crater on the Moon was named in his honour.
