An example device for coding point cloud data includes a memory and processors that handle octree-based data. For a current node, if inter prediction or planar mask data is coded, the device skips coding a single occupancy value. It also uses planar mask data from a reference frame to determine context for entropy coding when applicable.

A 2D search is used for IntraBC cost if activity is high; otherwise, a 1D search is used. The IntraBC cost helps select an optimal encoding mode for encoding the unit.
