Welcome to the 23rd of July 2024: Our goal is to celebrate the patent holders who have reached noteworthy milestones in their fields this week.

Junyi Li

Vice President of Engineering at Qualcomm. Qualcomm Fellow. IEEE Fellow. Co-founder of Flarion Technologies. A pioneer of OFDMA.

A key inventor of Flash-OFDM, the first commercially deployed OFDMA-based mobile broadband wireless communications system. A founding member of Flarion Technologies, a startup acquired by Qualcomm in 2006.

At Qualcomm, he has spearheaded research projects on D2D communications, V2V communications, and mmWave communications. He has co-authored the book, “OFDMA Mobile Broadband Communications,” published by Cambridge University Press.

Patent №: 12048050 (July 23, 2024) – Combined network access interface and sidelink interface discontinuous reception (DRX) alignment. A network access node with a transceiver linked to a sidelink receiver or transmitter UE is disclosed. It obtains a DRX slot offset value to align the DRX Active state start times of network access and sidelink interfaces, and then sends this value to the receiver UE.

Patent №: 12048006 (July 23, 2024) – Frame based listen before talk for radar. A radar device performs an initial listen before talk (LBT) procedure at the start of the first LBT frame, which is longer than the maximum propagation delay. It transmits a radar signal based on the success of the initial or an additional LBT procedure.

Patent №: 12047999 (July 23, 2024) – Access procedure configuration of a millimeter wave repeater. A repeater receives configuration information for its role in an access procedure, generates a signal based on this information, and transmits the signal to a wireless device.

Patent №: 12047962 (July 23, 2024) – Remaining minimum system information transmission, synchronization signal block forwarding, and demodulation reference signal management by wireless forwarding node. A wireless forwarding node receives semi-static configuration information from a control node and RMSI PDCCH information from a transmitter node. It then transmits the RMSI PDCCH to receiver nodes based on this information.

Patent №: 12047941 (July 23, 2024) – Downlink relay for passive internet of things communication. A method includes receiving configuration information and a PIoT message with a relay command from a network entity. Based on this message, the method involves transmitting signals to a PIoT device according to the configuration information.

Patent №: 12047932 (July 23, 2024) – Sidelink resource selection with assisting device usage awareness. This disclosure provides systems and methods for sidelink resource selection with AD usage awareness. A UE receives resource usage schedules from ANs, combines them into a single schedule, and identifies excluded resources.

Patent №: 12047910 (July 23, 2024) – Enhanced paging in wireless backhaul networks. A first wireless node receives an indication from a third wireless node’s distributed unit about the transmission of a paging message to a second wireless node. Based on this indication, the first wireless node’s distributed unit transmits a second paging message to the second wireless node.

Patent №: 12047901 (July 23, 2024) – Sidelink ranging with road-side unit assistance. A road-side unit (RSU) joins a sidelink ranging session between two user equipments (UEs). The RSU performs ranging with each UE to determine round-trip time (RTT) information. It then either sends the RTT information to the UEs or calculates the range between the UEs and sends this range to them.

Patent №: 12047846 (July 23, 2024) – Pedestrian positioning via vehicle collaboration. A UE receives multiple ranging signals from other UEs, measures their properties, and calculates the P-UE’s position estimate. Additionally, the P-UE can transmit ranging signals and receive position estimates and confidence levels from vehicle UEs (V-UEs). It then calculates its position based on these estimates and confidence levels.

Patent №: 12047808 (July 23, 2024) – Congestion control and priority handling in device-to-device (D2D) communications. A first device iterates a channel access counter (CAC) to a trigger value, selects time-frequency resources using a channel access mechanism, and transmits a packet to a second device based on this selection.

Patent №: 12047794 (July 23, 2024) – Techniques for bi-directional sidelink beam failure detection. A first sidelink UE determines sets of reference signals for beam failure detection to transmit to and receive from a second sidelink UE. The first UE transmits its set of signals using sidelink transmit beams and monitors the second UE’s signals using sidelink receive beams.

Patent №: 12047788 (July 23, 2024) – Transfer/federated learning approaches to mitigate blockage in millimeter wave systems. A UE trains a neural network (NN) based on beam transmission blockages to determine beam weights. The UE stores this information in an ML database and communicates it to an ML server. The server further trains the NN using a TL/FL procedure to refine beam weights for blockages and then shares this information with at least one UE.

Patent №: 12047147 (July 23, 2024) – Enhanced line-of-sight communications with analog multi-path beamforming. This disclosure describes methods for enhanced line-of-sight (LOS) communications using analog multi-path beamforming. A first device learns that a second device can concurrently transmit signals in two directions (LOS and indirect LOS) using different TCI states. The first device then receives these downlink messages simultaneously.

Patent №: 12047144 (July 23, 2024) – Techniques for channel state information based artificial noise injection. This disclosure describes methods for wireless communications involving channel state information (CSI)-based artificial noise injection. A base station receives CSI for a channel with a UE and applies artificial noise to control channel signals. The UE receives these noisy signals, applies pseudo-noise based on the CSI to reduce the artificial noise, combines the adjusted signals, and decodes them to obtain control information.

Patent №: 12047139 (July 23, 2024) – Reporting wide bandwidth operation for beamforming. . A UE transmits to a base station an indication of frequencies outside its operational bandwidth, compatible with its analog beamforming weights. The UE then communicates with the base station based on this indication.

 Patent №: 12047125 (July 23, 2024) – Techniques for self-interference measurement for a repeater node. A control node transmits full duplex configuration information to a repeater node and determines the repeater’s self-interference based on its transmitted signal.

Patent №: 12047993 (July 23, 2024) – Apparatus and method for synchronous multiplexing and multiple access for different latency targets utilizing thin control. This disclosure describes a thin control channel structure for multiplexing different data transmission formats. It allows a long transmission time interval (TTI) to be punctured, inserting a short TTI transmission during this period. The control channel provides scheduling information and grants to inform devices about the puncturing and can also carry other control information. Other aspects and features are included.

Patent №: 12047310 (July 23, 2024) – Reference signal design based on semi-uniform pilot spacing. This disclosure describes systems and techniques to reduce pilot overhead using common reference signals coded with orthogonal cover codes in both time and frequency domains. These signals can be de-spread for better resolution and larger pull-in windows.

Patent №: 12047216 (July 23, 2024) – Machine learning based nonlinearity mitigation using peak reduction tones. The methods involve receiving time domain waveforms with peak reduction tones (PRTs) generated by PRT neural networks from frequency domain data tones. The receiver uses a neural network, trained with the PRT networks, to reconstruct time domain data signals and then transforms these into frequency domain data tones.

Patent №: 12045264 (July 23, 2024) – Local data classification based on a remote service interface. A connected device at a client network runs a local data classification service based on a remote provider network’s classification service. The local service receives a data classification request from a client device using the same API as the remote service. It then obtains data from the client network’s sources and classifies it by sensitivity within the client’s data isolation boundary, ensuring the data isn’t exposed externally.
