Welcome to the 16th of July 2024: Our goal is to celebrate the patent holders who have reached noteworthy milestones in their fields this week.

Patent №: 12036108 (July 16, 2024) – Linking elements for implantable sphincter assistance device. An implantable restriction device includes multiple beads connected by links and a parking feature. Each bead has a housing, a passageway, and at least one magnet around the passageway. The links slide through the beads’ passageways, allowing the beads to move between constricted and expanded configurations.

Patent №: 12035983 (July 16, 2024) – Method for producing a surgical instrument comprising a smart electrical system. A method for producing a surgical instrument involves obtaining a handle with a shaft interface surface and a first set of magnetic elements. A shaft with a handle interface surface, a second set of magnetic elements, and a third set of magnetic elements is also obtained. The shaft is then attached to the handle. The first and second magnetic elements create an attractive force to pull the handle towards the shaft, while the first and third magnetic elements create a repulsive force to repel the handle from the shaft.

Patent №: 12035916 (July 16, 2024) – Surgical stapler with reversible polarity. A method for resetting a stapling apparatus involves changing the circuit polarity from a first to a second state, then activating the motor to rotate the cam member from the fired position to the home position.

Patent №: 12035915 (July 16, 2024) – Surgical staples comprising hardness variations for improved fastening of tissue. A surgical staple cartridge comprises multiple staples with legs extending from a base, designed to pierce tissue and contact an anvil’s forming pocket. The staples have zones of varying hardness.

Patent №: 12035914 (July 16, 2024) – Method of coating slip rings. A method for coating a slip ring for a surgical instrument involves depositing a less conductive material onto its conductive elements.

Patent №: 12035913 (July 16, 2024) – Staple cartridge comprising a deployable knife. A staple cartridge includes a body, removable staples, a sled for ejecting the staples, and a deployable tissue cutting knife. During use, a stapling instrument’s firing member advances to deploy the knife and move the sled through a staple firing stroke.

Patent №: 12035912 (July 16, 2024) – Adjustable communication based on available bandwidth and power capacity. A surgical instrument includes an end effector with jaws that hold a staple cartridge featuring a sensor array. It has a power source to supply power to the cartridge and a wireless transmission system for power and data signals between the cartridge and instrument. A control circuit detects data transmission bandwidth and power source discharge rate, then selects the sensor array’s sampling rate based on these values.

Patent №: 12035910 (July 16, 2024) – Monitoring of internal systems to detect and track cartridge motion status. A surgical end effector includes a cartridge with first and second sensor arrays. The first array senses a function of one component, while the second array senses another. Both arrays are electrically connected to a control circuit, which processes their signal samples to determine the cartridge’s status.

Patent №: 12035906 (July 16, 2024) – Surgical instrument including a handle system for advancing a cutting member. A surgical instrument includes a handle system, an elongate shaft with first and second drive members, and an end effector. The end effector has a channel for a staple cartridge, a movable anvil, and a cutting member. Engaging the handle system with the first drive member advances the cutting member a short distance, while engaging with the second drive member advances it a longer distance.
