Unsung Heroes: How Patent Attorneys Help Inventors Shine
Adapted from an article by Cantor Colburn partner Howard Levy

Inventors are often seen as the stars of the show, getting all the credit for their amazing new ideas. But did you know that behind every great invention, there’s often a helpful patent attorney acting like a secret hero?

Patent attorneys are like detectives and coaches rolled into one. They help inventors turn their ideas into something that can be protected by law. Here’s how they do it:

First, patent attorneys talk to inventors and learn all about their new idea. They ask lots of questions to understand exactly how it works. Sometimes, they even help inventors see things they missed. It’s like putting together a puzzle!

Next, patent attorneys check to make sure the idea is really new. They look at other inventions to see if anyone else has thought of it before. This step is super important because if the idea isn’t new, it can’t be patented.

Then, the attorney writes a special document called a patent application. This paper explains the invention in detail and helps protect it from being copied by others. Writing this document is tricky and requires special skills that patent attorneys have.

Finally, the attorney helps inventors through the process of getting the patent approved. They answer questions from the patent office and make sure everything goes smoothly.

So, while inventors dream up new ideas, patent attorneys work hard to make sure those ideas can become real, protected inventions. Next time you hear about a great new invention, remember the unsung heroes who help make it possible!
