Prolific inventors in Italy include Leonardo da Vinci (1452 – 1519), famous for his works of art, he was also a prolific inventor who designed many machines and devices, including the flying machine, a parachute, the machine for measuring the strength of materials, musical instruments, a mechanical knight, hydraulic pumps, finned mortar shells, and a steam cannon; Guglielmo Marconi (1874 – 1937), created the practical radio wave-based wireless telegraph system; Antonio Meucci (1808 – 1889), developed a voice-communication apparatus that several sources credit as the first telephone; Alessandro Volta (1745 – 1827), invented the electric battery, which provided the first reliable source of electrical energy; Galileo Galilei (1564 – 1642), inventor of the telescope and discovered the laws of motion; Antonio Pacinotti (1841 – 1912), created the dynamo, a device that converts mechanical energy into electrical energy.
